Thanksgiving, A Secret of the Universe, and the 3G’s

Thanksgiving is a national holiday, but it’s also a glimpse into a secret of the universe. 

Want to enjoy your life? 

Want to experience joy? 

Want to accomplish your goals and still enjoy the journey? 

Gratitude is the key. But not just on a day. As a WAY—of life.

Famous verse:

Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you… (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

Impossible! Or is it? 

What if you could retrain a negative mind to focus on the positive? What if you taught your brain to find the possibilities instead of the problems? What if you looked at the world through lenses of wonder, not worry? 

Imagine your life constantly overflowing with gratitude. Focused on the many blessings. Determined to leverage even the painful challenges for good. It’s possible. 

Start here: 

Instead of thinking of Thanksgiving as a holiday about food, football, and forced conversations with strange extended family, think about this…

Every night, starting tonight, practice Thanksgiving. Use this simple 3G framework:

G – Gratitude: Think about something from the day you are grateful for. Even if it was a tough day. Find something, focus on it, feel gratitude in your body. Say, “Thank you, thank you, thank you for…” (fill in the blank).

G – Gains: Celebrate an additional aspect of your day that represents forward progress. What moved forward today? What good was done that we can stack more good work on tomorrow? (Focus on gains toward your goals instead of the lack, or distance from a target. It’s better this way.)

G – Get To’s: What’s something coming your way tomorrow that needs a reframe? Redefine the task, meeting, call, obligation, etc, as an opportunity—a Get To. You get to be alive and engaged in good work that serves other humans in the larger story of life. You get to earn, engage, and grow tomorrow. You get to. 

Use the 3Gs nightly. Spend the last few minutes of your day like this—thankful—and watch your life change. You will retrain your subconscious mind, teach it what you want it to focus on. Your brain will pay attention and show you the life you train it to find. 

Not only will you make gains toward your goals, but you will enjoy the journey. You might even end up thankful all the time
